    About Service Civil International Madrid

SCI Madrid is the Spanish branch of the officially registered international movement SCI that since 1920 works for peace and understanding between peoples. SCI has for more than 90 years promoted volunteering work-camps connecting people around the world with local organisations that need volunteers.

SCI’s philosophy is that when working voluntarily with people from other cultures or other characteristics bridges cultures and stereotypes tend to break. These general aims became reality each year when over 300 volunteers (two from each nationality) collaborate in nonprofit organisations projects around the world, offering the opportunity for an intense experience of intercultural learning. We also welcome a similar number of foreign volunteers in projects in Spain.

    Project details:

    Location: Madrid, Spain
    Duration: 10 months
    Start/Finish: February 2019 – November 2019
    Program: European Solidarity Corps

The main tasks of the volunteers are the following:

The main objective of the project is to promote international volunteering done by people who are themselves international volunteers. The volunteer will collaborate in the implementation of our activities, according to the annual planning of SCI, supporting the professionals and the active members of SCI in promoting volunteering, viewed as a factor of change and social improvement, and its values among the Spanish youth. Among others, volunteers will be involved in following activities:

    • Promote international volunteering in its various forms and programs: Provision of information and orientation to young people that are willing to participate in our exchange program (short term and long term volunteering) or any other international programs, like Erasmus+ Volunteering (previously European Voluntary Service) and European Solidarity Corps.
    • Get involved in the process of sending and receiving volunteers to international work-camps. We usually send and receive around 300 volunteers each year to nonprofit organisations’ projects.
    • Incorporate and promote the presence of volunteers of different nationalities and cultures into our local SCI volunteer groups (Bocadillos en la calle, Spanish classes, North-South and Ecosphere). We consider valuable learning and intercultural exchange that occurs when people from different cultures volunteer together.
    • Organisation, participation and development in the intercultural awareness workshops organised during the week: Learning about human rights, fair trade, alternative economy, social exclusion, etc.
    • Participate in the organisation of specific training for the Spanish volunteers who will participate in work-camps.
    • Meetings with other voluntary organisations at regional and national level.
    • Collaboration in the preparation of information materials and dissemination: Monthly digital newsletter, posters, brochures, calendar.
    • Assistance to fairs or forums of voluntary service or local associations.
    • Participation in international volunteer camps that we organise in Spain.

    Working hours and days:

The daily program will have duration of 6 hours 5 days a week. There will be 2 consecutive free days a week and 2 days of holiday for each month of project. In order to facilitate the participation of a high number of volunteers, some activities will take place during weekend.
