    Call for volunteers to take part in an Erasmus+ Volunteering project at the Associação Académica da Universidade da Madeira (AAUMa), Madeira

    Our partner in Portugal, Associação Académica da Universidade da Madeira (AAUMa), aims to represent and support all the students of the University of Madeira in Funchal, involving them in the promotion of different cultural activities.

    About AAUMa

    aauma volunteeringThe Students’ Union of the University of Madeira (AAUMa) is a representative structure for students at the University of Madeira. It is a private, non-profit institution, ruled by its own internal statutes as well as by applicable legislation. Recognised by the Ministry of Education and Science, it is registered in the National Registry of Youth Unions of the Portuguese Institute of Sport and Youth. It has also been honoured by the local government of Madeira as an Institution of Public Utility, as recognition of the merits of its on-going mission.

    In AAUMa we lay emphasis, among others, upon the principles of democracy, independence and promotion of the human rights. And these are the principles that legitimize the majority of the decisions taken in accordance with the statutes and requires of the respect of minorities’ rights.

    Our objectives are to represent the students of UMa and protect their interests, to promote civic, physical, cultural and scientific education of its members and, above all, to claim, from the authorities that are responsible for that the best study conditions. The AAUMa assumes itself as invigorating element, creating a joint system capable of meeting the challenges of today and the future.Funchal volunteering

    In 2014, AAUMa held about 800 activities. The projects undertaken annually by AAUMa include: guided tours and scientific research in projects like Jesuits’ College of Funchal and History Tellers, the University Sports activities, “Doutorecos” summer camp for children, social care projects for students like “UMajuda”, “Bolsa de Alimentação”and “Bolsa Escolar”, and Media projects like “et al. magazine ”, “Contra-Factos” radio program and “Pátio dos Estudantes” on TV.

    The AAUMa, currently, has about 65 volunteers and 9 persons of full-time working staff. Among employees with an employment contract, we have a master’s degree graduate, a physical education teacher and two employees who are completing their studies. Through its various activities, the AAUMa covers different target groups, including children, youth, adults and seniors, both national and foreigner public.

    The main tasks of the volunteers are the following:

    Among others, the Erasmus+ volunteer will be involved in following activities:

    • Involved in the promotion of Madeira’s natural and cultural heritage
    • Involved in a range of activities with children, young people, adults and the elderly
    • Work with local young people who face social isolation
    • Work on inter-generational projects
    • Prepare and perform guided tours
    • Collaborate in the development of exhibitions and musical events as well as the marketing of these
    • Learn elements of running a retail business and a social enterprise by helping with the several tasks in the AAUMa’s shop chain
    • Be able to develop their own projects, with support from project staff

    Accommodation, food and transport arrangements:

    This project is based in Funchal on the Portuguese island of Madeira. As this is an Erasmus+ project, volunteers will receive insurance, accommodation (university residence in Funchal), food, local transportation and pocket money. Travel to/from Madeira will also be funded.

     

    Volunteer requirements:

    • Aged between 18 and 30 years old.
    • Currently residing in the United Kingdom.
    • Available for the duration of the project.
    • Must not have taken part in a long-term Erasmus+ Volunteering project before.
    • AAUMa is selecting 2 volunteers for this project, according to their interest in working with different age groups and cultures, as well as their motivation to take part in new projects, to acquire new knowledge and learn foreign languages.
    • Volunteers should also have good communication skills, a creative mind and the capability to implement their own activity ideas.
    • Priority will be given to volunteers facing geographical obstacles, e.g. those living in rural and isolated areas of the UK.
    • The placement would be ideal for a volunteer who is interested in a career in heritage and culture preservation, tourism, event management, marketing, languages and retail.
