Long-Term Projects

Project List

The list of Long Term Projects is updated and distributed bi-monthly. You can always find it here.

Long Term projects give you the opportunity to volunteer from between 2 – 12 months. Some projects are ongoing and recruit volunteers all year round on a rotational basis. Others just need long term volunteers at a particular time of the year. Most long term projects only need 1 or 2 volunteers at a time. If you’re interested in applying for a long term project, we recommend that you either have already done a short term project with SCI/IVS or have similar relevant experience. Since you will be undertaking a voluntary placement of months rather than weeks, it’s important that you are certain it’s something you want to do. Pulling out of a long term placement once you’ve taken it up, would let our project partners down and could have serious consequences for the work of the organisation.

Application Process

Once you’ve found projects you’re interested in, you will need to complete the Long Term Project Application Form. If you’re interested in more than one long term vacancy on the list, please include an additional sheet clearly stating your project choices in order of priority. Sign and date the form and send it into the IVS Office with the appropriate fee.

Some Long Term projects require volunteers to have particular skills and experience, so please check that you address any specifications outlined in the job description and only apply for those whose criteria you meet.

Important Notes

  • Projects working with children and vulnerable adults may require you to provide police checks, references and health clearance letters from your doctor. For projects this applies to, it should be stated in the project description. Please only apply for such projects if you are happy to provide such information.
  • We do not have credit card or e-commerce facilities. We can only accept payments by cheque or postal order. Therefore, please DO NOT fax or E-mail your application to us.
  • You will receive a written offer as soon as we know if you can be offered a place.

Insurance

You must take out proper private insurance cover before going abroad. This is a condition of participation in the project. This cover should include full accident and medical insurance, and travel cost reimbursement, just in case your project is cancelled at short notice. Ordinary holiday insurance cover is normally okay. If it does not cover “work”, then the SCI insurance policy will cover all “work” situations adequately for you, but it won’t cover any activities outside “work” situations.

Placement Process

Once we’ve received your application, we will contact you to discuss it with you in further detail. We’ll then send your application to our partner organisations, who will consult with the project partners. Since the availability of long term placements can depend on other long term volunteers moving on, it can take a couple of months to secure a long term placement, so consider this when applying. We will keep you informed of the process of your application and do our best to find a suitable placement for you.
