Country Information for Latin America
SCI partners in Latin America are usually social and community groups with different structures, who have direct contact with the social & political problems of a local or regional community and they work towards finding solutions for these problems. Currently SCI has partners in the following countries: Bolivia, Colombia, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Brazil, Panama, Peru and Paraguay.
Essential Information
Projects do not run in all of these countries every year.
Volunteers to Latin America must have good Spanish.
In some countries volunteers will need to pay an additional contribution towards their keep in country, normally between $100 - $200 USD.
Between 5 and 10 international volunteers join in the programmes in each country. The needs of the community at the time the volunteers arrive are used as a “vehicle” for the volunteers to join the daily life of the community.
The project work themes are usually:
- constructions & renovations of public interest
- agricultural work & promotion of biological agriculture
- workshops with women and children
- peace & human rights awareness work
- organisation of cultural activities (festivals)
Study themes may include workshops for political awareness.
