EuropeAustriaAT-SCI3-233: Peace and Disarmament2010-08-012010-08-14YesYesMeeting Place - Paths of Peace, Koetschach-Mauthen/Ploecken, CarinthiaDetails/PrintAbstract from Description
Many traces have been left by the First World War in the mountains between the Ortler Group and the Isonzo River during the years 1915-18. More than thirty years ago, a small group of mountaineering joined forces with the intention of restoring and re-opening some of the old wartime paths which led up these mountains. In 1973 this idea evolved into the founding of the Association named: “FRIENDS OF THE DOLOMITES”. Their motto became: "Paths which once separated us, shall unite us today" and the name "PATHS OF PEACE". Since 1983, the “Friends of the Dolomites” have been most active around the Plöckenpass area in the border region between Austria and Italy. The beautiful mountain landscape of the Carnic Ridge creates a marvellous backdrop to show visitors the soldier’s frontline environment in which such senseless suffering and hardship took place. Few other locations are better suited to show future generations the reality of war and how unsuitable it is for resolving conflicts. The friends of the Dolomites are working here, with the help of their International team of volunteers to reconstruct old trails, as well as excavate and reconstruct historical sites. EuropeAustriaAT-SCI6-366: Environment2010-07-182010-07-31YesYesAlpine Farming Encouragement, "Green Hands", CarinthiaDetails/PrintAbstract from Description
The forests, meadows and mountains of the Alps make up the place of many people’s dreams and desires. There they hope to find a way back into nature, to find the “real live”. Even if these areas and their inhabitants are in the middle of nowhere, they are in fact part of our globalised world. It’s often forgotten that the maintenance of these cultural landscapes is connected with additional efforts and lots of dangers, like windstorms, landslides and avalanches. In the two weeks of our camp we want to support the farmers in improving and renewing the protection forest above their homesteads. We will plant trees that are domestic for this mountain area. Furthermore we will remove bushes and trees from the mountain pastures, so the cows will find good grass again to chew on. Our volunteers have to be in a good physical condition as we will work at steep hillsides on the mountain. We will work in the Mölltal and the Asten, which is in the West of Carinthia and part of the Alps (and the National Park “Hohe Tauern”). Click for Full Printable Details!

The aim of “WachauVolunteer” is to preserve the most valuable and endangered natural habitats in the Danube river valley called Wachau. The Wachau (36 km long) is a wonderful composition of a natural and cultural landscape and is famous for its undammed Danube, the steep mountainsides and its winegrowing and vine villages. For more than 2.000 years humans cultivate vineyards and fruits alongside the rocky slopes. Old vine terraces made by stones, castles, monasteries and ruins border the river valley. Since the year 2000 the Wachau is recognized as World Cultural Heritage by the UNESCO. Besides the unique cultural standing the Wachau is also an exceptional natural habitat. The Wachau is part of the European Natura 2000 network of protected areas and has also been awarded with the European Diploma for Protected Areas. The Danube flows without dams and bridges and therefore floodplain forests and natural side channels contain a rich biodiversity like fishes, beavers, otters or kingfishers. On the rocky and steep slopes over the Danube still exist grassland meadows, abandoned stone terraces, pastures and natural endangered oak forests which hold valuable and threatened species and habitats: Owls and hawks, orchids and green lizards are well known residents.
